“My Life in the Bush of Ghosts” by Amos Tutuola is a surreal masterpiece. I retyped and sent whole pages to recommend it to friends. I don’t think any of them read it, but they have no idea what they’re missing.

Just read the quick description of this book and it sounds amazing! I love a fever dream type of read. You might also like The Vegetarian by Han Kan!

"Bush of Ghosts" is totally wild, definitely fever dream material. Which reminds me of Samanta Schweblin's "Fever Dream," another great weird book (coincidentally also short). My wife read and enjoyed "The Vegetarian" a while ago, but I haven't gotten to it yet. I'll have to snag it from her, thanks for the reminder!

I want to read your weird book!! Keep writing. Your elevator pitch has me hooked.

The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake was a book I picked up as a kid because it had a cake on the cover. A girl one day discovers that she can taste people's feelings in the food they prepare when she bites into her mom's toast and is overwhelmed with depression. It was deeply disturbing to me then and I absolutely hated it even though I was gripped by it, until I reread it as an adult and loved it for its supernatural-in-real-life twists and uncanny vibes. It was the sort of psychology I had to return to after growing up a bit.

Another WEIRD book is Towing Jehovah. God dies, falls out of the sky into the ocean, and then people just... tow the 2-mile long corpse around. It rots, smells. Weird stuff happens. It's satirical and probably pretty dated, but that is probably the weirdest book I've read.

Thank you so much! For reading and for the encouragement!

The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake sounds very unsettling and also like it would make me cry. The plot reminds me of a book I read and loved in high school called A Mango Shaped Space, about a little girl with synesthesia (sounds and words all have a color to her, so for instance, when her cat purrs, she sees the color mango even though I think the cat is actually black)

I read Rainbow Black by Maggie Thrash and it was a RIDE. I genuinely couldn’t put it down. It has true crime, LGBTQIA themes, time jumps, secrets, and satanic panic.

Also, any book by Grady Hendrix is creepy, crass, and has a little bit of southern sass.

Rainbow Black is such a cool title! Also I really enjoyed The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires by Grady Hendrix and have been meaning to check out something else of his.
